What Is Pi Network?
Pi Network is a unique crypto project and blockchain ecosystem. It aims to make cryptocurrency mining accessible to everyone – even if you’ve never mined a coin before in your life. Unlike Bitcoin, which requires energy-intensive hardware, Pi lets you mine coins just by tapping a button on your phone. Sounds simple? That’s the idea. Since launching in 2019, Pi has built a massive global community of users (called Pioneers) who earn Pi coins by participating in a social, trust-based network.
How Was Pi Network Created?
Born on Pi Day (March 14, 2019), Pi Network set out with a bold mission: make cryptocurrency easy for everyone. It kicked off with a simple mobile app and quickly grew a dedicated user base that earned Pi coins by checking in daily and building trust circles. Who Built the Pi Network?
Pi Coin was created by a group of Stanford Ph.D. graduates: Dr. Nicolas Kokkalis (Computer Science), Dr. Chengdiao Fan (Anthropology), and Vincent McPhillip (who later left the team). With their academic backgrounds, the team focused on building a blockchain system that combined technical innovation with social behavior.
How To Mine Pi Coin?
Mining Pi is simple. You download the Pi Network app on your phone, sign in, and tap a lightning button once every 24 hours. That’s it. Your phone isn’t actually doing complex calculations. Pi Network runs on a social security model where users create trust circles and build decentralized consensus.
There are four types of users:

Pioneer: A daily user who taps to mine.

Contributor: Adds trusted users to a "security circle" to help secure the network.

Has Pi Been Listed on Exchanges?
Pi officially transitioned to open mainnet on February 20, 2025. That means Pi coins can now (in theory) be traded outside the app. Some exchanges have listed Pi or Pi IOU tokens. However, a full global listing is still in progress.
Can I Buy Anything With Pi Coin?
Yes – but mostly within the Pi community. Some users have bought small items like mugs, t-shirts, electronics, or food by using Pi as a form of barter. Pi even held a "PiFest" event where over 100,000 merchants signed up to try accepting Pi. However, big-name stores and apps don’t accept Pi yet. It’s still very early, and Pi’s buying power is community-driven rather than mainstream.
Is Pi Network Legit?
Pi doesn't require upfront investment or fees to start mining, which sets it apart from many scams. The core team is transparent and development continues steadily.
