Tracking the Movement of Oil Tankers Departing Venezuela
Analyzing Oil Tanker Movements from Venezuela
Regular readers know that I dedicate significant effort to monitoring global oil tanker activity, with a particular emphasis on Russia’s so-called shadow fleet. My primary resource for this research is Bloomberg’s AHOY tool, which provides daily updates on oil tanker departures from ports worldwide. Up until now, my focus has been on tracking vessels leaving Russian ports—especially those lacking Western insurance or clear ownership, which are typical indicators of shadow fleet operations.
In this update, I turn my attention to Venezuela, sharing insights into the current patterns of oil tanker departures from its ports. The data suggest that Venezuela has considerable potential to increase its maritime oil exports. Should US policy decisions shift, there could be significant changes in these export volumes.
