Figma unveils innovative AI-driven features for removing objects and expanding images
Figma Introduces AI-Driven Image Editing Tools
Figma has unveiled a suite of new AI-powered image editing capabilities, allowing users to effortlessly remove or isolate objects and expand images directly within the platform.
According to Figma, these enhancements eliminate the need to export images to external editors and then re-import them, streamlining the creative workflow. While generative models like Nano Banana excel at producing images, Figma recognizes that designers often require precise editing tools that function without relying on text prompts.
Enhanced Selection and Editing Features
The lasso tool in Figma has received significant upgrades, enabling users to select, remove, or isolate objects within an image. Once an object is moved, the rest of the image—including background and color—remains intact. Additionally, users can fine-tune selected objects by adjusting lighting, shadows, colors, and focus.
Image Expansion for Flexible Design
Figma now offers an image expansion feature, making it easier to adapt visuals for different formats by automatically filling in backgrounds or other missing details. This is particularly useful when transforming a square image into web or mobile banners, reducing the need for constant cropping and manual adjustments.

Unified Toolbar for Image Editing
To further simplify the editing process, Figma is consolidating all image editing tools into a single, accessible toolbar. This new toolbar allows users to select objects or image areas, modify background colors, and add annotations or text. Removing backgrounds—a frequently used feature—will be prominently featured for quick access.
Keeping Pace with Competitors
While platforms like Adobe and Canva have offered object removal tools for some time, Figma is now bringing similar functionality to its users.
Availability and Future Plans
The latest image editing features are currently accessible in Figma Design and Draw, with plans to expand their availability across the entire Figma suite next year.
Industry Context
This launch coincides with Adobe releasing similar features for ChatGPT users. Figma, an early partner of the ChatGPT app, integrated with the platform last October. However, it remains uncertain whether these new editing tools will be accessible through Figma’s integration within OpenAI’s tool.
