An increasing number of American employees are abruptly leaving their positions—a trend known as "revenge quitting"—as burnout reaches alarming heights, according to a recent survey. Research from Eagle Hill Consulting, conducted in November 2025, shows that 55% of workers feel burned out, with the problem most pronounced among those with longer tenure.

a worsening situation for businesses, especially as the holiday period brings heavier workloads and puts additional pressure on already stretched teams.

Drawing on responses from 1,400 U.S. employees, the survey illustrates the extensive impact of burnout. Nearly 72% say it hampers their productivity, while 71% notice a decline in their overall work performance. Burnout also undermines customer service (65%), stifles innovation (64%), and affects attendance (56%).

a grim scenario: employees suffering from burnout are almost three times as likely to consider quitting within the next year, raising the risk of significant workforce turnover.

Melissa Jezior, Eagle Hill Consulting's president and CEO, described the results as a "wake-up call" for business leaders. She stressed that burnout is not just a retention problem but a serious threat to overall company performance and customer experience. Jezior urged leaders to tackle the underlying causes of burnout unique to their organizations and to adopt effective measures to help overwhelmed employees.

since November and December typically bring increased demands, further intensifying workplace stress.

Younger employees are especially vulnerable, with 66% of Gen Z and 58% of millennials reporting burnout, compared to just 37% of baby boomers. Those working remotely or in hybrid roles are also at greater risk, with 61% and 57% respectively experiencing burnout.

burnout equally to heavy workloads (50%) and interpersonal challenges (50%), such as teamwork and relationships with colleagues.

To make matters worse, many workers feel unsupported. Only 42% of those experiencing burnout have talked to their managers about it, and nearly half of those who do see no meaningful response. This gap leaves companies poorly prepared to prevent turnover or keep valuable employees, especially as competition for talent grows fiercer.

The results reflect a broader pattern of dissatisfaction in the workplace.

increasing worries about job stability, with 40% of employees expressing concerns about "winter hibernation," and one in three admitting to crying at work from stress. The Eagle Hill survey adds urgency to these issues, indicating that employers must act quickly to stop further declines in morale and productivity.

As businesses face the year-end rush, the survey is a stark reminder that neglecting burnout could have long-term negative effects.

, the trend of "revenge quitting" may intensify, forcing companies to deal with a talent shortage that could persist well beyond the holiday season.
