Dario Amodei, CEO and co-founder of Anthropic, is currently in India, where he intends to establish a new office in Bengaluru and discuss a potential collaboration with Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries, according to information obtained by TechCrunch. This initiative highlights the AI company’s efforts to strengthen its footprint in its second-largest market after the United States.

Sources familiar with the situation told TechCrunch that Amodei is scheduled to travel to Mumbai to meet with Ambani and other top executives at Reliance Industries, which is India’s most valuable firm and the parent company of leading telecom provider Reliance Jio. Discussions between Anthropic and Reliance regarding a partnership to broaden the reach of the Claude AI assistant in India have been ongoing for some time, according to these sources.

India, which ranks as the world’s second-largest internet market after China with over a billion online users, has become a key area of expansion for Anthropic. Many Indian AI companies already integrate Claude models into their products for both local and American customers. Digital analytics company Similarweb reports that India is also the second-biggest source of traffic to Claude’s website, following the U.S.

In August, Reliance Industries joined forces with major tech firms, including its current investors Google and Meta, to develop AI infrastructure and business solutions through its newly formed division, Reliance Intelligence. The Mumbai-based conglomerate had also considered working with OpenAI, which launched its sub-$5 ChatGPT subscription in India earlier this year and revealed plans to open a New Delhi office in 2025.

The anticipated announcement of a Reliance-OpenAI partnership was expected during OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s scheduled visit to India last month, but Altman postponed his trip.

Reliance Industries did not reply to a request for comment. TechCrunch has also contacted OpenAI for their response.

In addition to Mumbai, Amodei is also traveling to New Delhi to meet with senior lawmakers and high-ranking government officials, according to sources. Two individuals familiar with his itinerary told TechCrunch that he is also likely to meet Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Later this week, Amodei will be in Bengaluru to officially announce the opening of Anthropic’s new office on Thursday, sources told TechCrunch. He will be accompanied by Guillaume Princen, head of Anthropic EMEA, and Daniel Delaney, who leads the company’s startup initiatives. Leading venture capital firms such as Accel and Lightspeed are also organizing special sessions with Anthropic’s leadership to discuss how startups and developers can utilize Claude in their products.

According to Appfigures, Anthropic’s Claude app, which is available on both iOS and Android, saw a 48% year-over-year rise in downloads in India in September, reaching about 767,000 installs for the year. The data also shows that consumer spending on the app in India jumped 572% year-over-year, totaling $195,000 in September alone.

Despite these gains, India’s numbers are still relatively small compared to the United States, where downloads increased by 91% year-over-year and consumer spending soared by 604%. In September, U.S. users spent $2.5 million on the Claude app, according to Appfigures. Globally, the app experienced a 74% increase in downloads to 1.01 million and a 546% surge in consumer spending, reaching $5.62 million in the same month.

While OpenAI is focusing on building a sales and marketing team and managing policy matters from New Delhi, Anthropic’s Bengaluru office will primarily serve developers and startups.

A founder closely associated with Anthropic, who requested anonymity, told TechCrunch that India is currently the company’s largest source of usage.

Besides Anthropic and OpenAI, Perplexity is also targeting the Indian market. The company has teamed up with Bharti Airtel, a major Indian telecom provider, to offer its Perplexity Pro subscription to more than 360 million Airtel users for a year. The AI search firm has also tailored its product for Indian customers, such as by introducing live transcripts of earnings calls for Indian stocks to boost engagement.

Anthropic did not provide a comment in response to inquiries.
