OpenAI introduces in-app applications within ChatGPT

OpenAI is introducing a new feature that enables developers to create applications within ChatGPT. Starting Monday, ChatGPT users will have access to interactive apps from companies such as Booking.com, Expedia, Spotify, Figma, Coursera, Zillow, and Canva. Additionally, OpenAI is unveiling an early version of the Apps SDK, a toolkit designed for developers to build these applications.

This announcement was made by OpenAI during its annual developer event, DevDay 2025.

“Our goal is for ChatGPT to help people achieve more, boost their productivity, spark creativity, and accelerate learning—whatever they aim to accomplish,” said CEO Sam Altman. “By bringing apps into ChatGPT, we’re opening the door to a new wave of interactive, adaptive, and personalized applications that users can engage with through conversation.”

This new approach marks OpenAI’s latest effort to create an app ecosystem centered around ChatGPT, its leading AI platform. Unlike previous initiatives such as the GPT Store—which operated as a separate marketplace—this update integrates apps directly into ChatGPT’s interface, allowing users to access third-party tools during their conversations. This integration offers developers greater reach for their apps and aims to enhance the ChatGPT user experience.

By mentioning the names of different apps in ChatGPT, users can pull content from various platforms. For instance, saying “Figma, turn this sketch into a workable diagram” will activate the Figma app. Similarly, users can ask, “Coursera, can you teach me something about machine learning?” to use the Coursera app.

In a demonstration of Zillow’s app, users could instruct ChatGPT in plain language to look for apartments in a certain price range nearby. ChatGPT would then display an interactive map with available options, and users could continue the conversation to get more details about each listing.

ChatGPT will also suggest relevant apps when they might benefit the user. For example, if someone asks for a party playlist, ChatGPT could bring up the Spotify app in the chat. OpenAI has also announced that apps like DoorDash, Instacart, Uber, and AllTrails will be added to ChatGPT in the future.

According to OpenAI, the new system is built on the Model Context Protocol (MCP), which lets developers link their data sources to AI models. ChatGPT apps can initiate actions and display fully interactive interfaces within the chatbot’s replies. Some apps can even show videos in ChatGPT, which will be pinned at the top of the page and can be modified based on user input.

If users already have subscriptions to certain services, they’ll be able to sign in to their accounts directly through ChatGPT to unlock specific features. Altman also mentioned that OpenAI plans to introduce monetization options for apps within ChatGPT, including the recently added Instant Checkout feature.

A major concern regarding ChatGPT apps is privacy, specifically how much user data third-party developers can access. OpenAI states that developers are required to “collect only the minimum data necessary and be clear about permissions.” However, it remains uncertain whether developers will see the entire conversation, just a few recent messages, or only the prompt that launched the app.

It is also not yet clear how ChatGPT will decide between similar services, such as DoorDash and Instacart. While it’s possible that companies could pay for higher visibility in ChatGPT responses, OpenAI says its main priority will be to optimize the user experience.
